Moving with family

SF with kids

SF is a great city for families — if you're in the right neighbourhood and have sorted the practical stuff. Here's the community's honest take.

Visas for families

E-3D (spouse): Spouses of E-3 visa holders can get an E-3D dependent visa with work authorisation. This is a huge advantage over H-1B spouses.

Children: Children under 21 can come as dependents on most work visas.

Schools

Public schools: SF Unified School District (SFUSD) is... complicated. School quality varies enormously by neighbourhood. The lottery system is confusing. Start early.

Private schools: Expensive ($30K–$50K/year) but more predictable. Popular options include SF Day School, Town School, and Katherine Delmar Burke School.

International schools: The French American International School and German International School are popular with expat families.

Community tip: Talk to other ANZ families in the WhatsApp group before making school decisions. The local knowledge is invaluable.

Childcare

Daycare: $2,500–$4,000/month for full-time infant care. Yes, really. Start looking before you arrive.

Nannies: $25–$35/hour. Use Care.com or ask for recommendations in the community.

Au pairs: A more affordable option if you have space. Cultural Care and Au Pair in America are the main agencies.

Neighbourhoods for families

Noe Valley: The most family-friendly neighbourhood in SF. Good schools, safe streets, playgrounds.

West Portal: Quieter, more suburban feel. Good for families with young children.

Cole Valley: Small, charming, good community feel. Close to Golden Gate Park.

Community resources

The ANZ community has a growing number of families. There's a dedicated families channel in the WhatsApp group. Use it.
